Captain’s Challenge

Happy Saturday!

I am gearing up for an action packed day.  Well, I won’t actually be involved  in most of the action but it’s still exciting, Tate is doing Captain Thurmond’s Challenge today!  This triathlon is 28.5 miles of biking, whitewater kayaking, and running.   Relay teams are a popular option but not for my hubs, he is a one man team!  The run at the end is 8.5 miles with the first 5.5 miles uphill!  The Challenge is in Fayetteville, West Virginia, a town where we lived for the summers from 1998-2001 while working as whitewater raft guides, it’s going to be fun to spend the day there.

This is his first triathlon and I have no doubt he is going to ROCK IT!

This morning I made Tate a huge bowl of oats and then snuck in a 12 minute yoga session while my hard boiled eggs were cooking.  Brief but effective, I was correct in Thursdays prediction that I would be SORE and the yoga really warmed me up for the day.

It’s an arms day for me.  I am working to get back on my daily arms/abs, I was derailed a few times over the last two months due to illness.  In my car, aka my closet, I keep this great weight set that I bought at the Salvation Army last week.

Have weights, will travel!  So today I plan to fit in some exercises while waiting for Tate at one of the transition areas.

Have a great day!

Living the Good and Active Life

Whew, I am going to be sore tomorrow!  What a fantastically active day I am having.

My day started with a gentle yoga class at the local YMCA taught by none other than my fabulous big sister.  I had been avoiding yoga for a few weeks.  I knew that it was just what my body was craving but I couldn’t seem to get myself on the mat.  This morning I broke through that resistance and my body said “thank you, thank you, thank you”, especially my hips.

After lunch the hubby, my younger sister, my brother, my niece, and I hit the Greenbrier River Trail.  This trail is one of those great “rails to trails” where they converted an old railroad track into a multi-use gravel trail.  Tate ran, brother and niece biked, and sister and I walked.  We all met up at the swimming hole for a dip.

The river is so low that it is a little too warm but it is still refreshing.

On the way back to the car we got caught in a huge downpour!

We were soaked through by the time we reached the parking lot.

After a quick dry off I headed back to the Y for a Zumba class.  Do you know about this Zumba thing?  It is a BLAST!  I think I grinned nonstop for the entire hour, how can you not when you are shaking it like crazy!  If you haven’t had the pleasure of trying Zumba yet, seek it out!  It is a dance aerobics class to latin music and dance steps, which translates into a lot of shaking and grooving.  The dancer in me was SO happy to be moving to the music again, it’s been way too long.

Here are the pictures of “weighted walking” exercises that I promised yesterday

Bicep curl

Lateral raise

Overhead press

Front raise with tricep extension

Overhead tricep extension

I am off to see Brown Chicken Brown Cow at the local pub!  Who knows, maybe there will be a little more dancing in my day!
