Old Truths, New Truths part II
(The first half of this post is dated December 2nd)
Old Truth: I like being full.
New Discovery: Being full makes me slow, bloated, and uncomfortable. I “liked” the feeling because I was used to it. These days I eat until satisfied or 75% full, more often than full and it feels so much better!
Old Truth: Running burns a lot of calories so running a lot burns a lot of calories and will result in weight loss.
New Discovery: It’s really challenging to lose weight through exercise, especially if you are an avid exerciser of “normal weight”. Yes, running burns a lot of calories but our bodies are amazingly adaptable. Once our bodies recognize that we are burning a higher number of calories daily it reorganizes itself to hold onto whatever it can. I gained a pound or two while training for a marathon and I wasn’t eating more than normal.
Along those same lines…
Old Truth: Running is running…
New Discovery: …except when it’s jogging! I used to jog now I run. This is a discovery I’ve been playing with since New Year’s 2007-2008 but is finally here to stay. That New Year’s we rented a beach house in El Salvador with some friends. Amber and I would run on the beach together every morning. The first half of the week I said “you’re faster than me” but by the end of the week I realized the truth, she was a runner and I was a jogger. The line between running and jogging is a blurry one but here’s my definition; if I can talk without any interruption in my breathing than I am jogging. Running requires me to constantly push myself out of my comfort zone just a little to pick up the pace.
I’ve got a very fun kitchen experiment planned for this morning, making yogurt! Now, I’ve been making my own yogurt for a few months now and have been playing around with some flavors (ginger was good) but today I am making chocolate and peanut! I am imaging them swirled together…
I’ll let you know how it goes!
