What’s that you say? You’ve never made pirogies?
You start with a dough of flour, water, and egg yolks.
Rolled out nice and thin and cut into circles the dough is ready to be filled with balls of potatoes, onions, and cheddar.
Michael brought A KEG (a pony keg, but a keg nonetheless) of his High Dry Desert Stout. I might be slightly off on the name but I know he brought some ingredients back from Arizona. This beer is thick and a delicious mix of sweet and bitter. I didn’t hear an alcohol % but I am pretty sure it’s high. BTW, this is my big sister, Yarrow, we’ve gotten confused for twins or each other all our lives!
Drinks in hand, there is work to be done! The dough must be carefully wrapped around the potato filling.
Into boiling water the doughy dumplings must go. Next stop, the oven to keep things toasty.
And don’t forget the saurkraut, mushroom gravy, and fried onions. (I was told by a few people that my homemade sauerkraut was the best they’ve had!)
Looks like the pirogies pass the kid test!
Making pirogies at Christmas time is a family tradition from my mom’s Polish and Ukrainian heritage. Almost every year we break out the white flour and more butter than we probably use in a whole year and get to work.
We were aiming for 20 DOZEN but we lost track after about 14 (dozen). 35 people were here for dinner but we still have dozens for the freezer!
I am so glad I got my run in early, exercise really lifts my mood and energy throughout the day. How about you? Did you achieve your exercise goals for the day? If not, what stood in your way? Cold weather? Busy life? Overcommitted?
Have a wonderful night! I think I will sleep good tonight, pirogis in the belly and family all around.
It’s spelled differently around here, but I LOVE perogies. There are a lot of people of Ukrainian descent in the province I live in (Saskatchewan), so perogies and cabbage rolls are pretty commonly consumed at weddings, Christmases, etc. around here. I’ve never made them, though! Homemade are absolutely the best.
Homemade are the best but it is quite a process! Many hands are essential for this task!
p.s. I may have spelled them wrong, I’ve never actually seen it written by my family.
Wow so much dough!!!
Too many onions in this post though 😉
That pirogis looks really good!
Great job running in the cold this morning! I don’t think I would be able to do 22 degrees.
I finished my exercise goals for the day! I went to a yoga class and took the dog for an hour walk. I wanted to run but my foot hurts so I decided to take today off. I’m trying to listen to my body these days and hopefully avoid injury!
Injuries are such an interesting lesson in listening to your body, nice work responding to the messages. What kind of yoga do you practice?
I’m not exactly sure what kind of yoga I practice (I’m kind of new to it). My favorite class (the class I go to on Saturday’s) is power yoga. I like it because we do vinyasa flows, balance sequences, and challenging poses. It’s the first class I have found that is challenging and different every week! What type of yoga do you practice?
Looks like a fun family tradition. Spending time cooking and eating with family and friends is a great way to be together.
I ran/walked six miles with my husband and then tried out an exercise tv video that you mentioned a while ago on your blog – Strong and Slender with Stephanie. 20 minutes of cardio and strength training. I thought it was a good, fast paced video. I plan on doing it again soon.
Thanks for mentioning exercise tv on your blog. I had not heard about it before and it seems like a good option for adding variety to my at-home workouts.
I’m glad you enjoyed Exercise TV! It’s awesome for what it is, a free, quick, at home workout. I love that most of the workouts are about 20 minutes, even though I often do two of them it seems to go faster than if I was committing to a 40 minute workout. Not that I want my exercises to fly by, I LOVE my workout time, but if the time goes quickly it means I am engaged and having fun!
6 mile run, nice!
Yum!! My husband is part Polish, (see the last name??) and we love perogie. His mom sometimes buys them from Polish nuns that live near them in NJ. Those are the best I’ve had. We usually have to settle for Mrs. T’s. I did get my yoga in tonight – after I got all the presents wrapped. I also baked a batch of cookies (Sesame seed wafers – different and good).
I was wondering about your name!
Nice work on the presents and the yoga.
