What a weekend!
The last three days felt like a week and as such this post may stretch on for days ;).
Thanks for all of your congratulations on our 5 year wedding anniversary! Tate and I had originally planned to go camping on Friday night but last week he decided to surprise me with a different overnight trip.
I really had no clue where we were going when we hit the road on Friday afternoon. We ended up in adorable Staunton, Virginia.
First there were drinks in our room at Fredrick House.
Dinner was at Zynadoa, a farm-to-table restaurant that I’ve wanted to taste for years.
Chocolates from Cocoa Mill.
Then off to the theater. Blackfriars Playhouse is “the world’s only re-creation of Shakespeare’s original indoor theatre” and home to the American Shakespeare Center. I’ve heard wonderful things about the productions but hadn’t made it over the mountain to see for myself yet. We saw The Lion in Winter, by James Goldman and it was great!
Saturday, with a heat index in the triple digits, was all about the water.
Sunday morning was harvest time.
Followed by crepe time.
A month or two ago, 5 of us C’ville ladies decided to throw a baby shower for Matt + Kath. I offered to host since my beautiful new kitchen is perfect for parties. I also offered to make crepes for the brunch.
It didn’t occur to me until I was already in the throws of it that I don’t really know how to make crepes.
Matt said it best, “Faith, what kind of crepes are these? They don’t exactly look classic”. My only response was, “Matt, you know I don’t follow recipes and I’m not a classic gal so, nope, they are not classic.”
Cooking is one area where I have confidence, sometimes misplaced confidence, but confidence nonetheless. It doesn’t really occur to me that I don’t know how to do something, I just figure it out along the way. (and I’m the first to admit that it doesn’t always turn out great, but it is usually edible.)
Luckily, they turned out well and every last one got eaten.
Also on the menu, frittatas, cupcakes, kale salad, herb lemonade, Matt‘s homebrew, and sparkling wine.
(Kath, naturally, has lots more pictures over at Kath Eats!)
That about wraps it up. After an afternoon nap, we were treated to Sunday dinner at a friends house, a perfect summer evening meal of cucumber-mint soup, quinoa-stuffed zucchini, and tomato, feta, basil salad. As much as I love my new kitchen I was thrilled not to cook or clean, thanks Will and Sarah!
Such beautiful photographs- love the ones of you in the kitchen cooking the crepes with your apron on!
Thanks, making crepes for 2 dozen people on a Sunday morning was more fun than expected. 🙂
Your kitchen is so lovely! I love the rustic touches of the wood – especially that nook where you keep books/wine. Most of all, it just looks like a happy and well-loved space already.
That photo of the woman who seems to be cartwheeling on a log over the stream – that is FIERCE!!!! Is that you?
Aaaah to be fearless…
Thanks Mia, it feels like a practical but lovely space to me too!
Nope, definitely NOT me on the log! Walking across it and jumping off of it was plenty for me, can’t image going upside down! I feel the same way, ‘aaah, to be fearless…’ 😉
i thought the same thing. yikes. intense.
Thanks for hosting yesterday, it was lovely!! Your anniversary celebration in Staunton sounds great– Black Friar’s and Zynadoa have been on my to-do list, too! Maybe I’ll get over there one day… Hope your Monday is low-key and allows you a bit of recovery.
Have a date night in Staunton! It was so lovely!
Will you (pretty please) post your lavender lemonade recipe? I looks divine.
Hillary made it, she used the following recipe.

wow what a weekend. I love the look of that swimming hole it looks like a blast and makes me miss vermont so much.
what a lovely weekend. happy for your five happy years of marriage. what a great couple you are! his surprise overnight trip sounds wonderful, & that swimming hole looks awesome.
your crepes look nice & thin to me. i bet they were tasty. and…do you have a fig tree?! ::jealous face::
I do have a fig tree, I planted it last year and it’s 2 feet tall without any figs. 🙁 Luckily my friend has access to a fig GROVE!
Leave it to the baker to inquire…I thought they were delicious traditional crepes!
Are crepes baked!? I admit, I’ve never made them before- seems daunting…
I love going to rivers on really hot days! Especially in the coast range outside Eugene. So beautiful, and refreshing.
It looks like your vegetables are doing great! We don’t have tomatoes yet. I can’t wait until they get ripe. Nice work on the crepes! No need for classic 🙂
Looks like beautiful baby shower Faith! Your new kitchen is BEAUTIFUL!! Happy 5year anniversary to you and Tate!
Hi! I’m moving to Cville next month and am curious where the swimming hole is? It looks beautiful!
St. Mary’s Falls! So great, definitely check it out!
Thanks…will do!
You look stunning! I am pretty sure the first dress you are wearing is the same Patagonia one that I just got & adore. Where did you get the patterned dress you are wearing in the shower pictures?
Aw, thanks. Yes! It’s totally the Patagonia dress! The other dress is a fun vintage find from the Salvation Army.
I just stumbled across your blog, and it is so lovely! I’m also from WV, and look forward to reading more!
