What would you do with an extra hour in your day?

My answer would be different for different days but apparently today it is gaze at the garden because that’s what I did when I woke up an hour early this morning.

I didn’t end up getting my hands dirty because once I stepped outside I realized that the ground was still pretty cold.  I did, however, do a little weeding and planned out where my first seeds of the season will go.

I bought seven packets Southern Exposure Seed Exchange seeds yesterday and am itching to get them in the earth, especially the beets and peas because we’ve managed to grow greens all winter.

Even lettuce!

Southern Exposure Seed Exchange is a local company that specializes in heirloom, non-GMO seeds.  They focus on varieties that do well in the Mid-Atlantic region but, according to the website, they have customers across the country.  I buy their seeds at the local health food store for $1.99 a packet (unfortunately they cost more to mail order).

Hopefully those seeds will go in over the weekend…

Remember those beautiful Chioggia beets and watermelon radishes from last year?

The other project for my extra hour was working on my syllabus.

I am going to be teaching Modern Dance at Piedmont Virginia Community College for the second half of the Spring semester.  The class will be a mix of technique, improvisation, and choreography and just like all college courses, will include reading and writing assignments, homework, a final project/exam.

I guess my extra hour this morning will make up for the lost hour on Sunday-it’s that time again here in the U.S., don’t forget to spring forward!  Sunday night will be a beautiful thing…love the later daylight.

What would you do with an extra hour today?

If I find another extra hour I’ll run and do a little yoga…#iwillmovetoday

Who remembers comment commit?

Here’s a refresher; comment commit is something I’ve done a few times on Gracefulfitness as a way of creating a supportive environment of accountability to our workout plans.   I post my exercise plan in the morning and encourage you to do the same in the comments section of the post.  By virtue of sharing our workout plans we inspire and motivate each other and by putting it down in writing we commit ourselves.

My personal workout ‘plan’ ebbs and flows.  Sometimes I love to map out my workout goals for the month ahead and other times I just like to see what each day brings without really looking at the big picture.   I’ve been doing the latter for the last two months and while it’s felt pretty good and I’ve remained active, I am ready for a plan.  The main issue is that I haven’t been pushing myself very hard and I miss that feeling. I also miss the big picture, when I chart my workout I get a sense of success when I look back over a months worth of activity.

I’ve made myself a plan for the next 5 weeks and I look forward to seeing the days fill up with walking, running, Pilates, yoga, dancing, and strength training.

So how does this relate to comment commit?  I love publicly declaring my workout goals and find that it really helps motivate me to read about other people’s goals and accomplishments so I’m starting a Twitter hashtag to do just that!

#iwillmovetoday is a place to find motivation to reach your goal, to boast about your successes, to commit to your workout in writing, to give and receive virtual high-fives, and to inspire others to move.  No ‘plan’ is to small or too large!  Is your goal to get up from your desk every 20 minutes?  Good for you!  Sharing moving goals is the goal, whether it’s marathon training or light desk stretching, say #iwillmovetoday!

Today will be a squeeze for me to accomplish my goal.   Thankfully, I am teaching two dance classes and a Pilates class so I have some movement built into work.  My personal goal is a quick, full body strength workout, which looks like it may have to happen behind my desk between checking in patients.

Do you plan your workouts ahead or take it one day at a time?  Even when I don’t have a plan I find it pretty easy to motivate myself to move, I just love it, but I usually don’t log as many minutes or as much intensity as when I plan ahead.

Join me and say #iwillmovetoday!
