Vacationland
I arrived home from vacationland at 10pm last night, had the car unpacked and put away by 10:15, and was in bed by 10:20. Hello Monday!
Here’s the rundown of our 10 day excursion. We really put the road in trip on this one!
Friday
Left work at about 4 and drove to Brooklyn, arriving just in time to see March Fourth Marching Band at Brooklyn Bowl! Danced my ass off and grinned the whole time.
Saturday
Brunch in Brooklyn with my cousins!
Then off to Boston, where we were welcomed into town with gridlock and very clean streets. After NYC and Brooklyn, Boston-and particularly Cambridge where we stayed with these two characters-seemed very clean and well manicured, almost sterile. It’s lovely but I like a city with a little grit and grunge.
Sunday
A jog around Harvard, brunch with our hosts, and a drive to Portland.
We had plans to take advantage of Portland amazing food scene but when we pulled into town we were hungry, it was just before 5, and we pulled into the first place we saw-El Rayo Taqueria. I am still thinking about the grilled fish burrito bowl I had there. SO good.
Monday
Go to the Maine coast. Just go. It’s so special.
We camped at Camden Hills State Park, which was very nice and-get this-had wi-fi at the campsites! Crazy. And yes, we fully took advantage of it.
We went for a breathtaking hike, were given lobster rolls for dinner by the fisherman at the next site over, and skinnydipped at dusk in the clear, cool water.
Tuesday
After an awesome and very hilly trail run we drove north through the cutest coast towns ever, stopped for lobster at Young’s Lobster Pound outside of Belfast, and hit Acadia National Park in time for a little sightseeing and happy hour. 😉
We didn’t do much planning for this trip and when we inquired in the park about camping they said there was nothing available. After several phone calls we got a site at a private place outside the park, which was actually really nice but the mosquitoes were bad! A word to other procrastinators out there though, it is crowded but definitely possible to find camping and hotels in August without reservations!
Wednesday
The hike up and over Penobscot and Sargent mountains is one of the best I’ve ever done. Gorgeous granite. Vast vistas. Mountain top lakes to cool off in. Boardwalks. Wild blueberries. Heaven.
And a photography fail. The camera battery was dead.
Thursday
We woke up in a torrential downpour, although dry and cozy in our tent. Our carriage trail biking plans were foiled and we threw the soping tent in the empty cooler and drove to Providence. Tate was determined to complete his list of states visited and Rhode Island was the last hold out. So Providence it was.
It’s a very sweet little city! We found a block party outside the Rhode Island School of Design, delicious food, and great running routes.
Friday
Long car day to Pleasantville, NY to visit my aunt and uncle.
These two are so much fun! And great hosts! 🙂
Saturday
Way too many hours in the car. Like 10. We finally landed in our home town of Lewisburg, West Virginia. And I got to work making 10 dozen cupcakes.
Sunday
Our old and dear friend Mark married the lovely Lara in California last month and yesterday was their East coast celebration, hence the cupcakes.
Mark’s mom hosted in her gorgeous garden, the same garden where Tate and I took our wedding pictures 5 years ago. We tried to recreate one of them, I’m still searching for the original.
Today is a game of catch up. A busy day at the office and several loads of laundry await!
